New to Practice

If you have or are looking to recruit a newly qualified GP and they have limited or no general practice experience the New to practice scheme is ideal.

Meeting the needs of newly qualified GPs

The New to Practice Fellowship Programme is a programme of support, learning and development supported by national funding available to every newly qualified GP. Our Derbyshire programme will meet the needs of newly qualified GPs and fund them to attend professional development sessions, thereby ensuring a smooth transition into independent practice.

Important update- December 2023

NHS England confirmed this month that two 'current national GP retention schemes' - the GP fellowship and supporting mentors schemes - will cease from 31 March 2024.

We as of yet are unaware of what NHSE have planned to replace the scheme going forward to support newly qualified GPs and Nurses but we hope that they recognise the huge success the scheme has had, over the last few years in particular. We hope that over the coming months we will be provided with further guidance on NHSE’s plans to continue to invest in GP retention and will be able to provide you with an update as soon as possible (Via our monthly newsletter).

We encourage all newly qualified GP’s/ Nurses or new to general practice nurses to sign up to the scheme before the end of March to be able to benefit from the current N2P Scheme.

Education sessions take place on the fourth Wednesday of the calendar month between 1-4pm either virtually or face-to-face. Our New to Practice Education Lead is responsible for organising the educational sessions.

A timetable of events is emailed to delegates and practice managers on a 6 monthly basis to ensure GPs are released to attend the sessions as part of their training. A reminder is also sent one week prior and of the morning of the session to GPs.

Hub Plus invoice and payment process

Funding is available for newly qualified GPs within their first two years of CCT. Funding will begin as of sign-up date. The amount of time released, and funding paid will be determined by the number of sessions you do i.e., 1 session per week if full time (9 sessions).

Payments will be made through the practice even if the GP is completing the scheme in their own time.

Funding to reimburse backfill and to support oncosts (NI, pension, and tax) is based on releasing 1 session per week of a 9 session GP’s time and proportionately less (“pro rata”) for fewer clinical sessions per week.

Invoicing

  • A+B where
  • A = the pro rata sessional time x the sessional salary
  • and B = the oncosts (30% of A)
  • A+B / 12

The Hub Plus will calculate the amount available to claim and will highlight this once a sign-up form is completed and reviewed by the office.

The practice is responsible for invoicing and should do so by invoicing annually to General Practice Task Force (GPTF) Ltd, 2nd Floor, Kelvin House, RTC Business Park, London Road, Derby, DE24 8UP by emailing: ddlmc.thehubplus@nhs.net in PDF format.
